Why *young* farmers?
The National dota2(江苏)决赛下载v1.6版 Coalition is focused on supporting America’s next generation of farmers and ranchers. We use “young farmers” to include all people who are kicking off a career in agriculture, typically in their first 10 years of growing. That includes anyone from a first-year farm apprentice to someone pursuing a mid-life career change to agriculture. The U.S. can use as many new farmers as we can get!
We use the term “young” to grab the attention of our policymakers. When young people band together to fight for policies that support them, Washington responds. Many of the most successful social movements in history were in part driven by young people, and the food movement is no exception. Some of our affiliate groups prefer “beginning” over “young,” but we see the two as nearly synonymous; whether you’re actually young or young at heart, join us!
As a diverse and dynamic coalition, the Coalition is composed not only of young farmers, but also of established farmers, farm service providers, good food advocates, and conscious consumers. Everyone has a stake in the future of agriculture in this country, and we’re excited for you to join us in tackling the barriers beginning farmers face in establishing their farm businesses.
Find your local chapter and connect with our growing community of young farmers, ranchers, and supporters across the country. To stay up to date, follow us on Facebook , Twitter , and Instagram , and join our email list . You can also become a member today .
What policies does dota2(江苏)决赛下载v1.6版 support?
Learn more about our Federal Policy Setting Process here .
We support policies that address the top challenges for our nation’s young and BIPOC farmers and ranchers. Our Federal Policy Platform and priorities for the 117th Congress are:
- Land Access
- Climate Action
- USDA Access and Accountability
- Labor and Immigration
- Student Debt Relief
Racial equity is the base of all our policy pillars. To learn more, visit our Campaigns page and take a look at our mission, vision, and guiding principles .
Why are you working on racial equity?
Farmers hailing from BIPOC communities are some of the most skilled, talented, and resourceful young farmers and ranchers in our network. At the National dota2(江苏)决赛下载v1.6版 Coalition, we are fighting to clear the path for their leadership and wisdom to be recognized and regarded as integral in securing a sustainable future for agriculture. We do this by shifting power to farmers of color and prioritizing their values in all of our programs.
dota2(江苏)决赛下载v1.6版 centers racial equity in our programs, policy, and advocacy campaigns. We know that federal agricultural policies have reinforced the systemic racism that encumbers BIPOC farmers in almost every aspect of life, and we commit to advocating for anti-racist policy change. We recognize racial equity not as a pillar of our policy platform, but as the base upon which all policy must stand.
To learn more about our racial equity work please visit our racial equity page and read our Racial Equity Toolkit .

How do I get a grant for my farm?
There aren’t tons of grants available; loans are more common. Your best resources for grants would be:
- ATTRA – Appropriate Technology Transfer for Rural Areas, run by NCAT (National Center for Appropriate Technology)
- NIFA – National Institute of Food and Agriculture
- LFPP – Local Food Promotion Program
- FMPP – Farmers Market Promotion Program
- SARE – Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education, a wonderful way to fund on-farm research
- Speciality Crop Block Grant
- VAPG – Value Added Producer Grants. There is a great guide from NSAC about applying for these.
- Check out our Young Farmer Grant Program ! Open in February 2020.
You can see a list of some of these grants here and here .
You’ll need to know what you want to do before applying for a grant. Also, some grants are “matching,” meaning that you have to contribute money to the project.
Let us know if you find a great resource that isn’t listed here!
How do I get a loan for my farm?
dota2(江苏)决赛下载v1.6版 recently published a new guidebook to FSA loans . These federal loans can be low-interest and have some special set-asides for beginning farmers. Microloans, which are for $50K or less, have less application paperwork than traditional FSA loans.
Also check out our Credit and Capital page, which includes information on nonprofit lenders and crowd sourcing.
Farm Credit may be helpful as well.
Some investors (sometimes called “impact investors” or “socially responsible investors”) are beginning to fund farm purchases.
Last but not least, talk to your local chapter to find out about local resources!
